With Microsoft confirming "updates" for the Surface will come in the first-half of 2014, specifications about the tablet have now leaked.

According to Neowin.net, the second-generation Surface will sport the Intel's Core i5 "Haswell" processor. In addition, Microsoft is expected to amplify the RAM from 2GB to 8GB with a new kickstand.

WindowsSuperSite's Paul Thurrott elaborated on Neowin's report.

According to Thurrott, the next Surface will have the Core i5 Haswell and an increased battery life up to seven hours. He also added the Surface Pro 2 tablet will be available in two variants, likely the 4GB and 8GB models.

"Surface Pro 2 is expected to come with Windows 8.1 preinstalled," reported ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley. "Like the first-generation Surface, it will offer users the ability to run existing desktop apps, as well as new Metro-Style/Windows Store apps."

As Latinos Post reported, AllThingsD sources claimed Microsoft will hold an event on Sept. 23. The event may serve as the introduction for the next Surface tablets.

Latinos Post also reported on Microsoft's plans to drop the "RT" name from the next Surface tablet. According to AdDuplex, while accessing its Windows advertisement network, a new pair of Surface tablets was discovered. The advertising network stated it has "regularly" seen devices named "Microsoft Corporation Surface 2" and "Microsoft Corporation Surface with Windows 8.1" viewing its ads. The "Microsoft Corporation Surface 2" is reportedly the successor of the Surface with Windows RT tablet.

Microsoft first introduced the Surface tablet on June 18, 2012, with the Surface with Windows RT going on sale in October last year. The Surface with Windows 8 Pro tablet launched earlier this year.
