Rock Band Cafe Tacuba Embarks on US Tour

Alternative Mexican rock band Café Tacuba will embark on a tour through the US that will begin in California and will take them to the cities of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Fresno, Ventura and San Diego.

The band is promoting their latest album "El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco (The Objekt Formerly Known As A Disc)," which was released in 2012 and has been praised by music critics in Mexico and abroad.

Café Tacuba was formed in Satelite, a suburb just north of Mexico City in 1989 by brothers Enrique and Joselo Rangel, Ruben Albarran and Emmanuel del Real. The band was seen as one of the more alternative sounding ensambles of the trend that was dubbed "Rock en Español," which took over Latin American airwaves during the late 80s and early 90s. Their name comes from a famous coffee shop that is located in downtown Mexico City, which first opened in the 19th century until it was recently consumed by a fire.

The band will also visit Tucson, Ariz. and several Texas cities, including El Paso, Austin, Houston and Dallas. They will then head to Chicago, Ill., Milwaukee, Wis., New York, N.Y. and Washington DC, where the tour will come to an end on September 17.

The particular sound of Café Tacuba has caught the attention of mainstream U.S. media. Outlets such as NPR, the Los Angeles Times and Rolling Stone magazine have all praised the band's originality and style. Rolling Stone in particular was lavish in its praise and described the band's latest album as a "great musical experiment" and even went so far as comparing the band to The Beatles and Radiohead.

"El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco (The Objekt Formerly Known As A Disc)" was released last year after a five-year absence in which the band had abstained from recording as a group and several of the members pursued personal projects. The recording won the band several Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, and is usually described as Mexican folklore music mixed with rock and alternative sounds. In the album, the band collaborated with award-winning Argentinian music producer Gustavo Santaolalla. The first single was "De este lado del camino," which was followed by "Olita del Altamar" y "Aprovéchate."
