Verizon Wireless, with the help of Motorola, unveiled the next three Android additions to its smartphone lineup today: The Droid Mini, Droid Ultra, and the Droid Maxx. They also announced their release date and prices.

The newest Android-powered phones for Verizon Wireless actually harken back to the infancy of Google's operating system. Way back in 2009, Verizon Wireless and Motorola launched the first Droid branded phones, designed to run Google's Android 2 and compete against the AT&T-only iPhone 3G.

Now, at an event in New York City Tuesday, Verizon Wireless announced the Droid Mini, Droid Ultra, and Droid Maxx, which look to preemptively battle the iPhone 5S. Verizon has announced that the Motorola-built devices will be available across the country in Verizon stores August 20, at competitive prices.

The Droid Mini, the smallest device of the trio, will cost $99 at Verizon Wireless stores. The Droid Ultra will cost $199, while the Droid Maxx is priced at $299. Without a contract, the devices will cost $499, $599, and $699, respectively.

Maxx Specs

All three Droids look a lot alike, and there are similarities in their specs, but let's look at the flagship of the group to see what competition it's offering its rivals.

The most Droided out of the three new Motorola smartphones is the Droid Maxx. The Maxx has a 5-inch HD touchscreen with a still-unknown resolution. Verizon is hyping that the Maxx's (non-removable) 3500 mAh battery can give almost 48 hours of use out of the phone, or 25 days of standby time. If true, that's the best battery life for LTE smartphones on the market.

The Maxx comes with 32GB storage and a 1.7GHz CPU, but that processor is a dual-core. However, the Maxx reportedly has quad-core graphics built in, along with the flaghship-standard 2GB of RAM.

The Maxx has a respectable, but not top of the line, 10-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel front facing camera. Both are capable of Full HD recording, and the main camera can shoot 1080p HD video with up to 60 frames per second. The Maxx has Bluetooth 4.0 low energy, and of course WiFi and LTE connectivity.
