DmC Devil May Cry is one of the most controversial games of the year. The title has not yet been released but fans of the series have found numerous reasons to complain about the title including a sex scene and the box art. The critics have been far more complementary to this point, but a review from noted Japanese publication Famitsu could begin a wave of negative buzz for the game.

Famitsu's critics gave the game 34 out of 40 points. The critics complemented the game's mechanics and the action. Editor Ranbu Yoshida said of the game, "The wild side of the Dante you see here really looms large, giving him a cool edge. Once you get used to the controls, which use the L and R buttons for different things, you'll be able to launch a wide variety of combos and expand your attacks."

His colleague Jigoro Ashida added that "The controls are very comfortable, and using all your skills to flashily defeat foes is really exhilarating. Like with other games in the series, you can get high ranks if you put some thought into battle, making it fun for both beginners and experts."

The critics complained about the control scheme, which all the critics stated were too difficult to learn. "It's nice that the game targets the nearest enemy when you're wielding a gun," Ashida added, "but you have to press L3 to switch targets, which isn't as intuitive as it could be."

The other reviews for the title were launched by Xbox Magazine UK which gave the title a 9/10 and Gamesmaster UK, which gave the game an 89/100. Gamesmaster noted that the game is "bold, brutal and utterly brilliant re-imagining of the series that practically defined the hack-'n'-slash genre."
