As the new year brings in a fresh crop of rumors, one of the most exciting ones to pop up has to do with Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console. A poster on TGCF claims to have gotten ahold of the Xbox 720's specs, and from the looks of it, this is going to be one powerful gaming rig.
According to forum poster on TGCF, the Xbox 720 will be equipped with an eight-core CPU and 8GB RAM to give developers the kind of processing power they'll need to deliver next-gen graphics and gameplay. The Xbox 720's GPU will also have an 8800 series GPU, possibly the AMD HD 8000M, according to GameChup. The Xbox 720 should also have a massive 640GB hard drive and run a custom Windows 8 kernel.
None of this is official, so remember to use some skepticism when digesting the details. The poster, BD, is a former Ubisoft employee with a history of being fairly reputable, and the specs do seem to line up with previous rumors, but we'll have to wait until E3 for official details.
Larry Hyrb from Microsoft's Xbox Live team recently put up a countdown timer on his website Major Nelson that expires on June 11 - the very day E3 starts. Accompanied by the words "And it's on," the timer most likely suggests when Microsoft will finally reveal some official details about the Xbox 720. If we're lucky, there might even be some playable demos at E3.
Microsoft should also be releasing Kinect 2.0 alongside the next-gen Xbox. The sequel to Kinect is said to support up to four players at once and be accurate enough to read lips.
In an earlier Xbox World report, the magazine claimed that the Xbox 720 would also come with a TV input that would give the Xbox 720 DVR-like capabilities.
Many reports also imply that Microsoft is not interested in just developing a next-gen home console. The tech giant is also supposedly looking into producing a 7-inch gaming tablet and a gaming-focused smartphone.
