The Golden Globe nominees for the Best Supporting Actor category offer up a unique array of candidates; some of which are likely not going to garner any Oscar Recognition.

Alan Arkin: Argo

The veteran thespian has gotten his sixth nomination from the Hollywood Foreign press and has garnered a tremendous amount of recognition for his turn in "Argo" in which he dominates with comic relief. Arkin has not won any major precursor awards, but has received a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice. He is locked for an Oscar nomination on January 10 and has a solid chance of winning his second Globe ever. Back in 1967, he won the Best Performance for an Actor in a Comedy Music Motion Picture for his turn in "The Russians Are Coming." He could win, but there are a few other thespians with better chances than Arkin at the moment.

Leonardi Di Caprio: Django Unchained

There was time early on in the awards race where Leonardo DiCaprio was thought of as a major frontrunner to win the Oscar for his menacing role in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained." That time has passed in the Oscar race, but DiCaprio is still a favorite to take this award. He has been nominated a monstrous 10 times by the Hollywood Foreign Press and won back in 2005 for his dramatic turn in "The Aviator." His stardom could make him an easy choice to win this award by the HFP, but there are other actors with better chances than him. He won the National Board of Review's award, but was left off the Screen Actor's Guild ballot and has not won any other precursor awards.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman: The Master

Hoffman has turned into the favorite to win the Best Supporting Actor after numerous precursor victories and nominations at the SAGs and Critics Choice Awards. In "The Master," he goes face to face with Joaquin Phoenix in a battle of wills and emotions that also created the most complex male relationship in films this year. Hoffman has received five nominations in his career and won in 2006 for his breakout role in "Capote." He is the frontrunner to win but one man stands in his way. That man is...

Tommy Lee Jones: Lincoln

"Lincoln" secured more nominations than any other film at the Globes and Tommy Lee-Jones' emotional turn as Thaddeus Stevens was one of those. The HFP may look to award its most nominated film with as many awards as possible, making Lee-Jones the frontrunner in this race. It does not hurt that the veteran has already won a plethora of precursors in awards season. He has four Globe nominations in his career and won back in 1994 for his supporting role in "The Fugitive."

Christoph Waltz: Django Unchained

DiCaprio's worst nightmare is also his co-star. Waltz's turn in "Django" was on the level of DiCaprio and made for a memorable screen battle between the two. However, it could turn into a disastrous voting battle from the HFP which could ultimately split votes between the two and enable another one of the actors to take home the win. Waltz won this very award in 2010 for his breakout performance in "Inglourious Basterds" and it is unlikely he wins again. Of all the actors on the ballot, he has the longest shot of winning.

Predictions: The HPF knows it has a great chance to change the race. The Oscar nominations are out three days before they unveil their awards, but it does not take away from their chance to spin momentum in one actor's favor. DiCaprio could win, but Lee-Jones will be the winner in my opinion. "Lincoln" is bound to win a plethora of awards and this is one of them.
