The anchor for NBC's Sunday talk show "Meet the Press" is currently under investigation by Washington D.C. police for possession of a gun magazine.

Anchor David Gregory was seen with the gun during an interview with National Rifle Association (NRA) chief Wayne LaPierre in an discussion about gun laws following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newton, Conn.

The "Meet the Press" interview was broadcast on last Sunday, Dec. 23 on NBC and repeated on MSNBC. During the interview, Gregory showed what appeared to be a 30-round gun magazine.

Unfortunately for Gregory and the NBC news show, D.C. has strict gun control laws, as noted by Politico.

"Meet the Press" is filmed in the nation's capital and the Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed they are investigating the matter of Gregory displaying the gun.

"There are D.C. code violations, D.C. code restrictions on guns, ammunition. We are investigating this matter. Beyond the scope of that, I can't comment any further," said D.C. police officer and spokesman Araz Alali.

Politico has confirmed that NBC did contact the D.C. police department about showing the gun.

"NBC contacted [the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department] inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for their segment," Gwendolyn Crump, a police spokeswoman, said in an email. "NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazine is not permissible and their request was denied. This matter is currently being investigated."

And with recent trends of creating petitions on the White House's "We the People" website, a petition has been created to have Gregory charged for possessing the "30-round, high capacity assault rifle magazine" in D.C.

The petition created by "Ryan I" from Boise, Id, has since garnered over 7,600 signatures. The petition needs over 17,300 more signatures to reach the 25,000 threshold to get a response from the White House.

The petition comes as another White House petition was created to deport CNN talk show host Piers Morgan, claiming he violated the Second Amendment rights of the Bill of Rights.
