Microsoft confirmed last week it will sell its Surface with Windows RT tablets in retailers, and it has appeared in Verizon stores.

The first retailer to confirm it will sell the Microsoft Surface was Staples, and has begun selling it since last Wednesday.

"Staples is excited to provide this innovative product to customers just in time for the holiday season," said Staples Executive Vice President Merchandising Mike Edwards. "Staples is a leader in offering the latest technology for small businesses and consumers, and our customers can now experience Surface in store or online."

Best Buy went next, selling the device in their stores last Sunday, Dec. 16.

Right now the only place you can get a Microsoft tablet is at a Microsoft store. That all changes today as BestBuy.com begins offering the Surface," said President of BestBuy.com Scott Durchslag. "Customers have come to expect Best Buy - both its store and website - to be the place with the broadest selection of consumer electronics and our sale of this much-hyped new tablet just reinforces that point."

But are Verizon retailers next?

Not so.

The Surface tablet has been seen on display on Verizon stores but is not for sale. It was seen next to fellow Microsoft Windows software such as the Windows Phone 8's Lumia 822 smartphone by Nokia.

According to CNET, a Microsoft spokesperson said "We are delighted that Verizon have chosen Surface for use in their stores, however, we have nothing further to share at this time."

Verizon has not commented.

Could it be a sign that Verizon will carry the tablet soon?

According to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, the Surface with Windows RT has made "modest" sales.
