When you are thinking of places to move to, your first thought might not be Birmingham, Alabama. People say this and that about the South: it's too hot, it's too humid, it isn't urban enough.

Well it may be hot and humid, but there is plenty to do in a variety of cities! And Birmingham, Alabama, is one of them. There's plenty of history here, and that's one of the city's biggest claims to fame.

So, if you've been looking for Birmingham homes for sale and wondering what you might be doing there in your free time, have no fear! Let's go over the top three things to do in this fascinating city.

Sixteenth Street Baptist Church

Playing perfectly into Birmingham's history as a city of the 1960s civil rights movement, first up is the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. The Ku Klux Klan bombed the church in 1963, an event in which four children died. But the event was, in fact, a stimulus for the U.S. government to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The church was fixed up in 1964, and today it remains a highly popular stop in Birmingham's Civil Rights District. Check out the church as well as a lot of the other sites along the trail!

McWane Science Center

Great for the whole family, Birmingham's McWane Science Center features exhibits on dinosaurs, space, physics, and so much more. Head downstairs to check out the aquarium, where you can find a multitude of marine animals that you can't normally get close to in nature.

Aside from all the fun and exciting things to do and see in the museum proper, visitors can also check out McWane's IMAX theater, where you can catch films on science and related subjects.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Last, we're going to head outside to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, a 67-acre space that offers visitors plenty to do and see in a relaxing atmosphere. You can explore all kinds of plants in the gardens' glass conservatory and then head out to the Formal Garden for some beautiful views.

The gardens divide their spaces by plant, meaning you can explore sections of all rhododendrons, roses, lilies, and much more. Aside from these areas, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens also feature a herb garden (a real sensation for your nose) and a peaceful Japanese garden. These gardens come highly recommended and are a great way to spend some time on a nice day.

Birmingham has lots to do beyond these three things. If you're moving there, you surely won't be disappointed in the venues and other sites on offer.
