In time for the holiday shopping season, people will be looking to save money elsewhere, and free apps could be the source.

Amazon's Appstore provides both free and paid apps, but for today, the attention will focus on the free apps.

The top free apps on Amazon range from games, movies, social media, and music.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II Lite:

Developed by Sega of America and released on Nov. 28, the latest Sonic games is the "Lite" edition of the Sonic 4 Saga.

Episode II takes places following the events of the last game with Metal Sonic returning and forming an alliance with Dr. Eggman. To combat the duo, Sonic teams up with his classic teammate Tails.

Features in the game includes updated physics, HD graphics, Bluetooth connectivity to team up with friends, and unlock an exclusive scenario featuring Metal Sonic if the user owns both Episode I and II.

According to reviewer Claudia Chavez, "I think this game has a lot of potential and could go a long way. I love this game because it has jumps, kicks, flips, and lots of ninja moves. This game is going to be a fantastic experience."

However, barrel grl 333 reviewed, "This game made me want to chunk my kindle out the window and it slowed down everything on my kindle. I almost had to take my kindle back to the store and get a new one don't get this app."

Temple Run:

Developed by Imangi Studios, LLC, a latest update has been available for users with a thank you by Imangi Studios for making Temple Run hit 100 million (free) sales worldwide.

The game is said to be simple with "simple" swipes and tilt controls for the seven different playable characters in the game.

"Test your reflexes as you race down ancient temple walls and along sheer cliffs," describes Imangi Studios. "Swipe to turn, jump and slide to avoid obstacles, collect coins and buy power-ups, unlock new characters, and see how far you can run!"

Reviewer S. Coughlin stated, "This game is very fun and addictive. It teaches you how to play the game before you actually start playing it. And you never win! Otto mist keeps going until you make a mistake and die. I recommend this game to all ages because its easy, fun, and best of all, FREE!"

KY.Fan reviewed, "Looks like a lot of fun but I wouldn't know because the lagging is horrible on Kindle Fire. It took shutting down to get out of the game. Please fix."

Netflix:

For the movie fans, developed by Netflix, Inc., the app allows users to watch movies and television shows as often as they want. Users can also resume watching video they were originally viewing on another computer or device.

To use Netflix, users must sign up for a subscription on their main website and pay for the monthly subscription fee.

Reviewer C. Osborne "mystery fan" stated, "This is a great well run company. The pricing structure is very reasonable and they have many choices to pick from. We don't go to the movies often so to be to rent movies by mail works for us."

Khris Cantrell "Jed" reviewed, "This was a great app before the last update. Now it will not load on my Kindle Fire at all. I deleted it until they decide to fix it."

Pandora:

Pandora Media gives users instant streaming of their music favorites.

Users can select their own personalized radio, rate, ship, and bookmark songs. Additional features include access to artist bios and create playlists on your smartphone instead of a computer.

Pandora does feature advertisements after every few songs, but users can purchase Pandora One for $3.99 per month for non-stop music with no advertisements in between.

Ramon reviewed, "This is a great app for all you music lovers out there. I really enjoy using this app, and I'm sure you will too."

For reviewer midlifecrisis63, "I don't listen to local radio because of all the talking and commercials. I've liked Pandora online so I thought I'd try the app. EVERY three songs there is a video commercial and there are constant pop-up ads. Thanks, but no thanks. Uninstalled it."

Bubble Birds 3:

Developed by XIMAD INC., the new game of the Bubble Birds franchise includes five different islands under the new Adventure mode. Bubble Birds 3 also introduces the Blitz mode and users can post their highest scores.

With Bubble Birds 3, users can play along with friends on various levels and in weekly Blitz tournaments.

According to Karen Jacobs, "Lots of fun and hard to stop once you start. I play a lot of arcade type games and this is one of the better ones."

JenO reviewed, "Game play is much slower and nowhere near as fun. I am quite disappointed in the new one. I'm addicted to the original game, I would love to see this one a bit faster at least."
