The biggest tragedy of the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in Newtown, Conn. on Friday is that it was not a singular event.

In the United States alone, there were 16 random mass shootings in 2012 which killed a total of 88 people. Sandy Hook wasn't even the only shooting last week.

Here are the details for the mass shootings in 2012, defined as deadly attacks in which multiple victims were shot at random.

The gunmen-for they were all men-are unnamed in this article, so that the enormity of their crimes may overshadow their fame.

Feb. 22 - A man got into a heated argument in a spa in Georgia, pulled his gun and opened fire, killing five people.

Feb 26 - Gunmen fired indiscriminately into a nightclub in Tennessee, killing one and injuring 20.

Feb. 27 - A high school student in Ohio killed three classmates.

Mar. 8 - A man barged into a psychiatric hospital in Pennsylvania armed with two semiautomatic handguns. He killed two people and wounded seven.

Mar. 31 - A gunman fired on a funeral procession in Florida, killing two and injuring 12.

Apr. 2 - A former student killed seven people execution-style at a Christian college in California.

Apr. 6 - In a racially-motivated attack, two gunmen fired randomly at black men in Oklahoma. Five were shot and three died.

May 29 - A man opened fire in a coffee shop in Washington State, killing five people before turning the gun on himself.

July 9 - Multiple gunmen opened fire during a soccer tournament in Delaware in an attempt to kill the tournament organizer. They succeeded but also killed two other people, including a 16-year-old soccer player.

July 20 - A mentally-disturbed gunman fired semiautomatic weapons into a theater packed for the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." He killed 12 people and injured 58.

Aug. 5 - An Army veteran and white supremacist killed six people and injured three others in a Sikh temple in Wisconsin before killing himself.

Aug. 14 - Three people, including a police officer, were killed at Texas A&M University by a lone gunman.

Sept. 27 - A man who had been recently fired returned to his workplace, a small business in Minnesota, and killed five people before killing himself.

Oct. 21 - A man killed his wife and two other women at a spa in Wisconsin before killing himself.

Dec. 11 - Armed with a rifle, a man opened fire at a shopping mall in Oregon, killing two people at random before killing himself.

Dec. 14 - A lone gunman killed 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Before killing himself. He was armed with a semiautomatic rifle and two handguns. Before the rampage, he killed his mother in their home. All of the children who died were between the ages of 6 and 7.
