Fans of the game have previously thrived on rumors and speculations about the yet to be released "Persona 5." Now, the game's director himself revealed legit information about the upcoming title, giving followers material to chew on, rehash, and dissect until the game's release.
In an interview with Game Informer, Katsura Hashino talked about "phantom thieves" - those who "enter another world and steal the malicious intent from others' hearts."
The characters of the game reportedly get hold of the Isekai-Navi, which lets them act as "phantom thieves" and develop a feeling of belonging to this kind of dynamic. As such, they "throw themselves headlong into helping others and reforming society with their own hands."
Further, the only obstacles to this arrangement are adults, being authority figures.
However, in "Persona 5," the story gets a twist in that the team don't stumble into or feel compelled into the case, but voluntarily put themselves into it. As such, they gain the attention of a bigger enemy, which is the main premise of the game.
Hashino went on to reveal what makes "P5" characters different from current or previous ones.
"Unlike Persona 3 or Persona 4, the protagonist and his team in this story aren't being dragged into some sort of case or major crisis to resolve," he said. "The story begins with each of them looking for a sense of identity, and seeking to reform society with their own will."
"It's quite different from the previous games' protagonists who had no choice but to solve the mysteries they were confronted with," he pointed out.
Hashino, however, did not name the main character, who remains a cool and silent character like the previous "Persona" protagonists.
Then there's Ryuuki, who "wants to reform society and believes the Phantom Thieves can do this," as noted by Game Spot.
"The third character, named Ann, lived abroad so has a 'distinct foreign air' that draws attention to her, but also keeps an 'emotional distance" because of this," the site went on to say.
The fourth team member is "oddball" artist Yusuke, who "thinks differently than most people." The last one is Morgana, who is "quite well-informed on the strange 'other world'; more so than the protagonist and his team." This character, aside from having a mysterious gender or origins, has also been described as a "prideful" instructor who has set standards for phantom thievery.
Hashino concluded by saying that although the story is set in Japan, the theme applies to all.
"Mankind's tendency to each view the world through their own individually distorted sense of reality - and its consequences on society and relationships - is a subject that resonates across the world," he said.
Atlus has previously said that the game will be released on PlayStation 3 and 4 in the summer of 2016 rather than 2015.
