After some smartphone makers followed Apple's lead in producing handsets with a metal exterior, LG appears to be hopping on the all-metal body bandwagon as well.

Reports leaking from South Korea said that the company may be churning out an all-metal G5.

"With many competitors choosing 'premium' materials to build phones, such as metal, glass, and wood, LG is still one of the only companies to offer an all-plastic flagship device," Droid Life noted. "However, LG's new V10 features a metal trim on its siding, and the G4 had custom backsides that featured leather."

An insider who reportedly had laid eyes on the prototype of the upcoming flagship said that the new design "takes a major step forward than previous smartphones."

Could this mean that the next LG phone may have a radically different look? Will it feature groundbreaking design that makes it edge out the competition, particularly Samsung and Apple? There have been whisperings of a curved-screen G5, which is a feasible option considering the company had released curved smartphones in the past (e.g. G Flex).

The South Korean tech company needs to create a winner in the G5, as the G4's look and specs were not as raved about as hoped, considering it pretty much was similar to the acclaimed G3.

As to when the said device will be released, no official word on this aspect has been announced just yet. However, earlier this year, LG Electronics Mobile Communications chief Cho Jun-Ho hinted that the company may be releasing a "super premium" device in the second half of 2015.

A few months afterward, he backtracked and said that "super premium" has not been used to describe the upcoming product, although it's a fact that it will be a "high-class" unit and will be unveiled in the last quarter of 2015, Phone Arena said.

"Speculation and whispers suggest that the phone will be of the 'phablet' kind, made to battle Samsung's Galaxy Note5 and the upcoming iPhone 6s Plus," the site noted. "Now, whether LG will be adding a special stylus to the phone is still up in the air."

Could this device be the G5?

Some pundits have predicted that the G5 may be announced early next year, in time for February's MWC event.

Details about the upcoming model's specs are sparse. It has been suggested, though, that the G5 may sport an iris scanner, as LG is reportedly working with a biometrics company on making such a functionality available on the handset, Android Pit said.
