Starbucks' iconic holiday cups have become a cause or concern - at least for the internet. The coffee giant recently rolled out their new holiday-themed paper thermases, but they were not like the one from years past.

Since 1997, when holiday cups first made their appearance, the holiday cups featured festive designs like, snowmen, snowflakes, reindeer, and decorative ornaments. However, this year took a homely turn. The cups are a simple ombre red stamped with the iconic Starbucks logo.

The internet has since launched into a snowstorm of sorts. Some people were completely offended by the lack of decoration this holiday season.

@erindoneagain "Tbh I preferred the old Starbucks holiday cups just 'cause they were cuter..."

@libbster219 "‪@Starbucks you offend me, my family & friends by not putting Christmas decorations on the red cups.‪#boycottstarbucks"

@nick_mangene "Now ‪@Starbucks is blowing off Christmas with their non-Christmas coffee cups.  I'll never step into a Starbucks again. ‪#boycottstarbucks"

Some users mocked the entire situation, which is coming to be known as the "War On Christmas"

@Tyrron234 "Let's all boycott Starbucks because their cup is red!!! Because this means the world is ending...."

And some Christian groups believe the lack-luster red cup was a stab at Christianity itself. Outspoken Evengelist Joshua Feurstein took to his Facebook to tell his 1.8 million followers what Starbucks was really up to... in his opinion.

"Starbucks removed Christmas from their cups because they hate Jesus," he captioned a video commenting on the red cup debacle. "I think in the age of political correctness we've become so open-minded our brains have literally fallen out of our head...Did you realize that Starbucks wanted to take Christ and Christmas off of their brand new cups? That's why they are just plain red."

The video was viewed over 12 million times.

However, not everyone agrees. Other Christians have spoken out, saying otherwise.

@MCastroMusic "As a Christian, I can tell you that the color of Starbucks cups have nothing to do with Jesus, the gospel, or Christianity. They are cups."

@TonieBell1 "‪@Starbucks I'm a Catholic Christian and I like the clean simplicity of the cup also it doesn't offend my Jewish &Muslim  &other friends Thx"

Starbucks said the plain red cups were their way of engaging their customers this holiday, since customers have always drawn on their traditional white cups.

"In the past, we have told stories with our holiday cups designs," Jeffrey Fields, Starbucks vice president of Design & Content, said in a statement. "This year we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories."

In a statement released Sunday, Starbucks said, "Creating a culture of belonging, inclusion and diversity is one of the core values of Starbucks, and each year during the holidays the company aims to bring customers an experience that inspires the spirit of the season. Starbucks will continue to embrace and welcome customers from all backgrounds and religions in our stores around the world."
