The first untethered jailbreak for iOS 9 devices is finally out, courtesy of Chinese team Pangu. Various apple devices may start using the new tool, including the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models.

The Pangu Team revealed the release on its Twitter account. The tool is available for Windows only in the meantime, but an OS X version is expected to launch for Mac users soon.

Mac Rumors revealed that Pangu will be compatible with all iPhone, iPod and iPad models on iOS 9 up to iOS 9.0.2. The iPhone models that can use the jailbreak tool include the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and 5c, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. The iPad models include the iPad 2, 3 and 4, iPad Air and Air 2, iPad Mini and iPad Mini 2, 3 and 4. The fifth and sixth generations of the iPod Touch are also included.

By jailbreaking the following Apple products, users can install previously unapproved third-party apps, custom themes, mods, tweaks, utilities and other types of content known as packages from Cydia, an unofficial App Store for devices that have been jailbroken, based on the same Mac Rumors report.

Cydia Substrate is an underlying framework for jailbreak adjustments and currently supports iOS 9, iPhone Hacks cited. Developers of Cydia have to update their jailbreak modifications to stay compatible with iOS 9 or later versions. After the device is jailbroken, users can install Cydia to download and install unofficial packages.

Forbes wrote that the iOS 9 jailbreak requires the device to be connected to a PC via USB. There is no obvious sponsor for the new jailbreak. Chinese firms in the past few years have sponsored jailbreak downloads to hopefully make their respective App Stores available to jailbroken products. At present, Team Pangu did not mention any sponsors and there was no sign of a third-party store except for the standard market Cydia.

TechCrunch explained that being untethered means that the device is not required to be plugged into a computer to operate. The new jailbreak is said to be the first public version for the iOS 9. The iOS 9 was reported to have a security system called “rootless” which prevented malware. Although the new untethered jailbreak is said to be operational, users are still cautioned about the risks that jailbreaking pose.

More updates and details from Pangu Team are expected soon. Tips and instructions on how to avail of the jailbreak are available online.
