For many years, the character of Aquaman has been the subject of jokes and insults as the least powerful of the founding Justice League members. As the character was long taunted as only being powerful in the water, the jokes were well placed.
Comic Book reports that actor Jason Momoa, who plays the king of Atlantis in the upcoming "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" movie, says the jokes will stop after the film's release.
The actor was recently interviewed during the Toronto Fan Expo Canada 2015, and when asked about what he would bring to the character, Momoa replied that while he won't be spilling any jokes or corny one liners, Aquaman can get serious once the situation calls for it.
According to Cinemablend, Momoa will change the way that people look at Aquaman. Momoa has stated that not all comic book characters were looked at the way they are now. Batman was best known for the campy 70's TV show starring Adam West, while Superman was best known for the Christopher Reeves films. The actor goes on to say that while right now, Aquaman is still the butt of many, many jokes, he hopes that the film will bring the character into a new light.
In the comics, Aquaman has a variety of powers, many of which are water based. He has the power to communicate with all water-based life forms, from fish to whales and even sharks. He has strength that rivals that of even Superman and possesses the Trident of Atlantis, which grants him power over the seas and oceans. With that being said, previous versions of the character have been parodied as weak and sometimes even homosexual. While that is not the case, as the character does have a queen named Mera, it will be a daunting task for Momoa to shed the character's reputation.
If anyone can shed said reputation, it is Momoa, who came to stardom during his role as Khal Drogo in the first season of the HBO hit series "Game of Thrones." While the character was only on screen for one season, Momoa's reputation as a tough guy with a sensitive side was born.
Currently, the exact role Aquaman will be playing in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" is unclear, as the character has yet to see any screen time in any of the trailers already out. Fans should know that Aquaman will be getting his own solo film in the near future, just like the other Justice League members.
