There aren't any official details on the PlayStation 4, but source leaks and industry reports have started to give us an outline of what the next-gen Sony console will feature. British magazine PSM3 recently let loose all they know about the PS4, and here are some of the highlights.
PSM3 stated that Sony has neither responded to or confirmed the information listed in their article, so be sure to keep an open mind. Until Sony releases the official PlayStation 4 details, everything must be regarded as speculation.
For starters, the PSM3 reports that the PlayStation 4 won't be called the PlayStation 4. The number 4 is pronounced "shi" in Japanese, which translates to death. Since '4' is an unlucky number for the Japanese, much like 13 is in the United States, there's a good chance Sony will steer clear of that association. The console might even be called 'Orbis,' like the dev kits that have recently been sent out.
PSM3 also states that the next-gen PlayStation should come with a quad-core processor, 16GB flash memory, and either 4GB or 8GB RAM, depending on how much Microsoft puts into its next-gen Xbox console (currently dubbed the 'Xbox 720,' or 'Durango'). The PlayStation 4 won't be backwards compatible with PlayStation 3 games, nor run games in the rumored 4k resolution. Instead, the console will most likely stick to 1080p and 60 frames per second. The 4k resolution should be reserved primarily for videos.
All PlayStation 4s are also expected to ship with a PlayStation Move controller and a camera. Classic games should be offered through a cloud gaming platform such as Gaikai, which Sony acquired earlier this year.
The report also says that Sony should be showing off PlayStation 4 demos at E3 2013 next year.
Sadly, PSM3 is reporting that the next-gen PlayStation will be quite expensive. According to them, it could cost between €400 and €500, which would translate to a price range of $510 and $635.
