Hurricane Sandy is set to hit the New York City area with winds ranging 60 to 100 miles per hour, pending on borough.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), "Sandy expected to bring life-threatening storm surge flooding to the mid-Atlantic coast...including Long Island Sound and New York harbor."

On top of the rains, heavy snows are expected for the Appalachian.

New York City (NYC) categorize evacuations based on the three zones for NYC residents, A, B, and C.

Evacuation orders have been issued for residents living in Zone A areas of New York City. Zone A residents face a flood risk from any hurricane near the city.

Some neighborhoods in the Zone A area include Battery Park City in Manhattan, Red Hook and Coney Island in Brooklyn, City Island and coastal areas of Throgs Neck for The Bronx, the Rockaways in Queens, and all of Staten Island's coastal areas.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has suspended all trains and buses as of 7 p.m. Sunday and will extend throughout Monday until further notice.

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has also confirmed all public school will be closed Monday. In regards for Tuesday's schooling schedule, Bloomberg stated he will make an announcement on Monday.
