If "Fifty Shades of Grey" simulated romance, its sequel will be thrilling audiences with a suspense-laden plot.
In the wake of the release of the teaser trailer of "Fifty Shades Darker," it's been reported that the follow up to the film adaptation of the best selling novel by E.L. James will be "more of a thriller."
Fans of the trilogy would find this treatment apt as the second installment of the novels took on a darker turn with the emergence of some skeletons in billionaire "dominant" Christian Grey's closet and a certain someone whose presence threaten to put certain lives at peril.
James' husband, Niall Leonard, had been commissioned to write the script for the sequel - something that Universal Pictures chief Donna Langley apparently approved.
"He actually did a draft that wasn't credited on the first movie, and he did a really good job," she was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter as saying.
There has been no word on who would replace Sam Taylor-Johnson, who directed this year's release. However, the lack of director for the upcoming flick has not kept the studio from releasing a teaser clip promoting the next installment, prompting some pundits to heighten their curiosity over the movie project.
"Is this a discarded scene from the first film? Why is Christian Grey putting on that mask?" Vanity Fair inquired.
The 30-second teaser has been described as not showing audiences what they've not already seen, as one of the promotional images for "Fifty Shades of Grey" had shown the title character in the same mask featured in the recently-released clip. This time, however, the masked Grey is animated, to the sound of the same heavy-breathing that accompanied the teaser to the original movie.
The upcoming flick will be released February 10, 2017, which is 2 years to the exact date of the first film's release. The third installment, "Fifty Shades Freed," has been slated for a February 9, 2018 release.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" has since raked in $570 million in box office revenues worldwide. However, despite the commercial success, the film's director had made it clear she won't be back to helm part two, although it's been understood that Dakota Johnson, who played innocent college student Anastasia Steele, and Jamie Dornan, who took on the role of the billionaire BDSM practitioner, will be back in the next installment.
Despite reports of artistic conflicts between the book's author and the directress, Langley said that the film "is exactly the movie I wanted to make and that the studio wanted to make and that our director wanted to make," MTV noted.
