"Memorial," the second episode of season four of 'The Vampire Diaries,' was an edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting episode as Elena (Nina Dobrev) learns to feed as a new vampire and Mystic Falls welcomes a brand new mysterious and lethal vampire hunter called Connor Jordan (Todd Williams).

Elena, who made the transformation to vampire status during the season premiere, struggles to adapt to Stefan's (Paul Wesley) all-animal diet. So much so, that the newly fanged doppelganger can't hold down any of the animal blood she had feasted on. Not that boyfriend Stefan knows.

Jilted-Salvatore Damon (Ian Somerhalder) lends Elena a hand-figuratively and literally-by letting her feed off of his blood. However, his vampire blood doesn't do the trick, forcing Elena to bite down on ex-boyfriend and good friend Matt (Zach Roerig), who's feeling guilty of her transformation. Thankfully, she was able to control her urge to suck him dry and both move on from the ordeal.

In the meantime, the group prepares the memorial service for the 12 killed town council members, including Pastor Young. Although audiences know that it was the "good" pastor that detached the gas line and subsequently blew up his fellow council members, many in Mystic Falls accuse Damon of doing it.

While at the Grill, Sheriff Liz (Marguerite MacIntyre) asks Damon to fess up but to no avail. "Don't look at me," Damon says. "If I was going to kill a bunch of people I wouldn't blow them up. I'd have a dinner party." Connor, who is convinced the town is covering up the deaths of the Founder's council members, interrupts the two, and requested an audience with Liz.

Failing to get the results he looked for with Liz, Connor heads out to the Lockwood estate. After he forces himself inside the house, he meets Tyler (Michael Trevino) and immediately figures out that he's a vampire. The mysterious slayer spends no time and fires some rounds of vervain-covered bullets into Tyler's chest. Unfortunately for him, Tyler, a hybrid, manages to get away.

Back at the memorial, Elena continues to grapple to keep her "food" down, putting vampire slayer Connor hot on her trail. Connor proceeds to use April, Pastor Young's orphan daughter, to lure unsuspecting vampires to his line of fire. As she takes the podium to speak on behalf of Pastor Young, Elena becomes aware of April's dripping blood and begins to tremble and sweat. Stefan saves the day and whisks her off back to her seat.

The rest of the vampires become aware of Connor's trap and in a strange twist, Tyler takes the podium and is shot by Connor. As the community rushes out of the church, Damn catches up to the vampire slayer but is bested by some wooden bullets. Stefan finds Damon on the floor and instead of helping him up, decks him in the face.

Back at the church, Elena rushes to help April but is overcome by her vampire desires to drink her blood. Caroline (Candice Accola) manages to stop her in her tracks and gets Elena to compel April to forget what happened. Unfortunately, Elena plants a memory in April's head that doesn't exist.

Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Matt run into Connor at the Grill, where Jeremy inadvertently outs himself by commenting on Connor's tattoo, which normal humans can't see.

The night rounds out as the group gathers together to mourn all those they have lost by lighting Japanese lanterns and releasing them into the sky. Damon, however, doesn't want to play along and instead finds himself drinking by himself at Alaric's (Matt Davis) grave. Alaric appears next to Damon-without his knowledge-and lets his friend know that he misses him too.

'The Vampire Diaries' season four, episode three airs next Thursday, October 25 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
