When will the hit "Game of Thrones" series end? Will it get an extension? George R.R. Martin, author of the hit book series "A Song of Fire and Ice" to which the TV show is based, has the ultimate answer to the question.
In his latest online journal entry posted on "Not A Blog," Martin simply answered the question with "I don't know. No one knows." The author admitted that he himself does not know how long the show will run.
"This is Hollywood, friends. As William Goldman wrote in ADVENTURES IN THE SCREEN TRADE, in Hollywood nobody knows anything'," Martin further said.
Martin said he knows that showrunners Daniel Weiss and David Benioff are looking at a "Game of Thrones" series with seven seasons and HBO wants a much longer series, even exceeding seven seasons. He said he already knew that the series would continue since one HBO top executive told him after the second episode of the first season that they personally want the series to run on television for "ten years." And that he has heard the same demands from them from time to time.
HBO programming president Michael Lombardo was quoted in an Entertainment Weekly report saying, "This is the hard part of what we do...We started this journey with David and Dan. It's their vision. Would I love the show to go 10 years as both a fan and a network executive? Absolutely."
However, Martin emphasized that as of the moment, the series is set to continue until six seasons.
"[I]t should be pointed out that neither ten seasons or even seven is locked in. Right now, 'Game of Thrones' is guaranteed only six seasons. That's all HBO has officially committed to, by contract. We can speculate about additional seasons beyond that, but that's all it is, speculation," he added.
Martin stresses that nothing is sure at the moment. "HBO will order season seven, we hope... or maybe, just maybe, they will order seasons seven AND eight. But even if they just order season seven, that doesn't mean that the show will end in seven; it could just represent a return to the original policy of committing to only one season at a time."
"Game of Thrones" will be back on its fifth season on HBO this April.
