Android L 5.0 Release Date & Download: Sony Rolling Out Lollipop to Z Series Only

Many Sony users took to Twitter all their questions regarding Sony's Lollipop roll out. For instance, one user named Robert David (‏@lecyclistedu25) tweeted and asked Sony what is the reason behind its "late" Lollipop roll out.

Sony responded, "We are eager to provide you the upgrade, we're finalizing our testing & remain focused on rolling out soon."

In a separate Q&A with another user, Sony revealed that it is not yet sure when the update would roll out on the Xperia ZQ handset. The update is also not yet ready for the Xperia Z2, as revealed by another Twitter conversation between Sony and a fan. The Japanese electronics giant also admitted that there is still no definite timeline for the Xperia Z3 Lollipop rollout. Rather, it urged its users to continually check the Sony official blog for official news and updates.

Despite the uncertainty on when will Lollipop finally roll out, one thing is for sure; Sony is only rolling out the new Lollipop update on its Xperia Z Series. In several Twitter conversations, Sony has revealed this. Here is what Sony said: "Hi. We can advise that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is going to be released for the entire Xperia Z series only, we do apologise."

This news has obviously earned the ire of many Xperia fans, with some even threatening to shift to another mobile company like Motorola or Apple. We don't know yet for sure whether there would be a change in these plans but it has definitely left many loyal users of older models broken-hearted.

This news however confirms our earlier report which listed only the Z Series of Sony as Lollipop recipients. This series includes Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact, and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.

The International Business Times noted that the Z Series' last OS update was the Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Similar to previous updates, Lollipop is expected to be sent via OTA in stages. Users can also check for updates manually via the device's Settings. As of the moment, the only non-Z series phone to get the update is the recently unveiled Sony Xperia M4 Aqua.

IB Times said the Lollipop update comes with new colorful user interface, new Notifications and lockscreen, a battery saver feature, an enhanced security, new Quick settings, a new device sharing mode, and other features like Android TV and OK Google.
