The iPhone 5 may have eclipsed the Galaxy S3 in terms in anticipation and hype, but that hasn't seemed to take away Samsung's flagship phone's momentum. The Galaxy S3 continues to be a best-selling phone and has now won the "Phone of the Year" award from T3

The news, via SamMobile, shows that Samsung is holding its own against the iPhone 5 - which is arguably the most popular consumer electronics device of all time. Samsung sold over 20 million units of the Galaxy S3 in its first 100 days, and the Galaxy S3 is the best-selling T-Mobile phone of all time.

So what is it that makes the Galaxy S3 so special?

For starters, the Galaxy S3 has a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a  resolution of 1280X720 pixels. The international Galaxy S3 comes equipped with a quad-core processor. The U.S. version features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, but if you've had any chance to use one, you'll know it still delivers solid performance. The U.S. Galaxy S3 is available through AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and C-Spire, according to Samsung.

The phone also sports an impressive 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Galaxy S3 released in early summer with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running, but an official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is slowly launching in international markets as we speak. Samsung has listed the Jelly Bean update for the U.S. carriers as "Coming Soon!"

The Galaxy S3's sleek look and reliability have turned it into the current Android smartphone king. Samsung does have a more powerful and updated handset on the way - the Galaxy Note 2 - but the massive 5.5-inch screen won't make it as appealing as the Galaxy S3's smaller size.

Expect the Galaxy S3 to continue to be the best Android smartphone out there for a while, and a deserving winner of the "Phone of the Year" award."

Note: The iPhone 5 was not even listed T3's list of "Also in this category," leading me to believe that the new Apple smartphone was not considered for the award. The Apple iPhone 4S, however, is listed.
