The Samsung Galaxy S3 is slowly getting its dosage of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates after a healthy wait. More and more countries are beginning to receive the upgrade, with South Koreans being the latest to receive Google's newest version of Android.
The Jelly Bean upgrade should begin rolling out today, October 9, for the native Korean LTE version. Website SamMobile states that the variants SHV-E210S, SHV-E210K, and SHV-210L will be getting the upgrade, while UberGizmo and AndroidAuthority are reporting only the SHW-M440S is seeing the upgrade.
Website YouMobile has kept an updated list of Jelly Bean upgrades for the Galaxy S3 around the world by country. There is no official listing that Korea has received it as of 11:40 a.m. ET, but the list does show that Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Poland all have their official Jelly Bean versions out.
U.S. consumers, as usual, will have to wait a while longer. Samsung only recently confirmed on an update page that Jelly Bean was coming to the Galaxy S3 in the United States, but only said that it was "Coming Soon!" to AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular networks. While there is no indication, it is a safe bet that those updates will roll out before the end of 2012, and most likely in time for the last stretch of the holiday season to better compete with the iPhone 5.
The reason U.S. consumers have to wait longer is 1) The U.S. Galaxy S3 is different than its international cousins, and that 2) Carriers in the United States have to approve the upgrade, and often fill it with bloatware, before sending it out. The extra step adds extra time.
