Many iPhone 5 users, especially those who bought the new Apple handset through Verizon, noticed something strange in the week after its launch - that despite being set to Wi-Fi, the iPhone 5 was still eating into data off the cellular network. Luckily now, if you're a Verizon customer, Apple has released an update that should fix that

"This carrier settings update resolves an issue in which, under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network," reads an Apple release about the update on the support website.

To download the Apple Verizon iPhone 5 W-Fi fix, simply go to Settings>General>About, and you should be notified of a "Carrier Settings Updated" alert, which you then install. And voila, that should save you from running over your data plan and incurring massive charges.

More good news - it seems that a Verizon rep has confirmed to CNNMoney that Verizon users should not be charged for any unwanted data usage. How far and well this will be implemented in regards to the millions of iPhone 5 users remains to be seen.

Verizon seems to be the carrier biggest hit by the Wi-Fi issue. Other reports about AT&T users experiencing similar issues are out there, but not in the same volume.

The iPhone 5 released to such hype that it seemed only natural that the most-wanted consumer electronics device in history would be hit with a series of complaints. From physical scratches right out of the box, to the incredible frustration using Apple Maps, the iPhone 5's initial shipment will have its share of problems, but one that could cost users more money every month seemed a bit cruel. Luckily, Apple seems to be taking note of user complaints, apologizing for Apple Maps, and getting this update out to Verizon users.
