After what appeared to be a false alarm, Robert Downey Jr. clarified that he may not be back for yet another "Iron Man" sequel.

"They do have a plan, and I think they're going to announce - they're very secretive about it," he was quoted by The Guardian as saying. When asked whether he will return, he responded with the following: "Just between us, no - but I'm going to do other stuff with Marvel. I'm still going to be involved with Marvel and there's going to be plenty of other fun stuff."

If indeed RDJ will not appear on "Iron Man 4," these 5 may prove to be suitable replacements as the Marvel hero:

Mark Wahlberg

"I would like to take over the 'Iron Man' franchise for Robert Downey... [but] it's one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I've never been asked," the actor declared in an interview, as noted by ScreenRant last year.

Come to think of it, the guy is a real contender for the role, as he's been known for his action movie work and has also been associated with robots, being the star of "Transformers 4." But perhaps his association to that franchise may not work well for him when taking the "Iron Man" project in consideration.

Jon Hamm

The "Mad Men" star has figured in various "who should play Tony Stark" lists circulating the Internet in the past year. This could undoubtedly be down to his ability to portray a charming, ladies man in the hit TV show. Metro noted that Marvel had named the actor as the new Iron Man in an April Fool's joke last year. It was, however, a move that was seen by the publication as probably Marvel's way of breaking the idea of having Jon play the debonair billionaire. Nay or yay?

Lee Pace

Tor.com mused that the "Guardians of the Galaxy" actor could perhaps pull of such a big role, as he "seems determined to challenge himself in his theater and film choices."

Bradley Cooper

Nobody will argue the fact that this man has charm - loads of it. He wouldn't be named Sexiest Man Alive in 2011 by People Magazine if he weren't. He also knows how to be funny and dashing at the same time. And he can be witty, too. So, will he be cast as the man in the red-and-gold suit soon?

Jamie Foxx

Although he had been cast in "Spider-Man," Marvel could rock the boat a bit and take on a risk by casting a non-Caucasian man as Iron Man. Sure, Jamie has the charm, humor, attitude, and wit, but will the makers of the movie consider taking such a risky venture? And will fans like it?
