Fans are excited to watch the third installment of Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games" trilogy, but here's an even bigger reason to get excited about it: the mockingjay will actually sing.
Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen will show her sensitive side in the film by hitting her notes, as per director, Francis Lawrence's request.
Not that she was happy about it: in fact, she was anxious! The director told Hollywood Life, "She hated me for making her do it. She'd probably tell you it was her least favorite day."
It's about time! In the books, Katniss Everdeen is supposed to have a lovely singing voice, hence, the reason why birds sang with her at The Games. More than that, Variety reports that her song, "The Hanging Tree" is essential in the battle with the Capitol. Mentioned a couple of times in the book, the haunting lyrics is supposed to be taught to Katniss by her father but was not allowed to sing it. It was later on when she finally figured out the meaning of the lyrics, and it was fitting for her fight as the Mockingjay.
The filmmaker also revealed that JLaw is insecure about her singing, telling The Radio Times, "She'll probably never really understand it because she's so sensitive about the singing. But she did it and she did it all day. . .and she hated me for making her do it all day. . .but she did and it's great."
Despite her hesitation, her director was plenty pleased with her performance, saying that the actress, with the help of a vocal coach and music from The Lumineers, killed it at her singing scene. In fact, he was all praise for the actress, telling the magazine, "The Lumineers sent the melody over and then we had a vocal coach, who sort of shifted the key for Jen's voice. Then she started working with Jen once or twice - Jen didn't really want to do too much of the training - but she recorded it for me as a test so I could hear it. I was worried, I really thought we were going to have to do a bunch of pitch shifting, but she sounded great. What you hear in the movie is what she did on the day in the quarry."
