What better way to ramp up "Pitch Perfect 2" than to add more impressive musical talent to the cast? The world-renowned acapella group, Pentatonix, is joining the succesful film franchise, which earned around $115 million in the global box office in 2012.
Pentatonix is an American acapella group composed of Scott Hyoning, Kristie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola, all hailing from Texas, according to their bio on MTV. The group gained popularity in 2011 when it won in the third season of the NBC show "The Sing-Off" for their rendition of "Eye of the Tiger." From there, the group went on to bring home $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony. It has one album to date and has sold more than 500,000 records.
Pentatonix has a pretty impressive online following. Its YouTube channel has over 150 million views and over 1.8 million subscribers, with its most viewed videos including Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know," Lorde's "Royals," and the "Evolution of Music," which showcased 36 songs and generated a whopping 21 million views. Its second album will be out in November 5.
All that said, it is really no surprise that Pentatonix is joining Part II of the American musical romantic comedy, which lent further attention to the bustling careers of Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Ester Dean and other new stars. "Pitch Perfect" was all about an (surprise!) a capella group that beat all odds to win the national competition. Pentatonix will be a perfect addition to the cast.
"Pitch Perfect 2" has already started production, writes Zap2It, and bits of information about the film itself and the cast have been released. So far, we know that Katey Sagal, the star of "Sons of Anarchy," is stepping in to play the mother of Hailee Steinfeld's character. Scott first broke the news when he shared a photo on his social media account with the movie's logo in the background. A few hours later, the official Pentatonix Facebook page posted a photo of the whole group on the film's set. Whether they are actually given lengthy roles or are just doing a cameo remains to be seen. Could they be on the protagonists' side, or will they be a competing group? The possibilities are endless! But we're excited nonetheless.
"Pitch Perfect 2" is set to hit the cinemas on May 15, 2015. It stars Anna Kendrick, Elizabeth Banks, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson and, still, the rest of the gang. It is directed by Elizabeth Banks.
