The word's out: late night veteran and icon David Letterman will be retiring in 2015. Enter potential replacements: Amy Poehler, Jay Leno, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, Time speculated.

Well, the question is, will he be replaced? Or will the show be scrapped altogether and another one put in its place?

It's understandable that CBS hasn't commented on this matter yet - it's simply too early to tell. Plus, it would just make things look as if they're eager to dust themselves off the aging host and appear a bit insensitive by talking about his replacement even a year before he will sign off.

However, Deadline.com's Nikki Finke tweeted that her "sources" hint at Colbert as "the only one on the air currently that CBS is considering."

Right now, various pundits on the blogosphere have pitched in their own suggestions, which ranged from Louie C.K. to Neil Patrick Harris. There are also the girl-power recommendees, such as Amy Schumer, Maya Rudolph, Ellen Degeneres, Retta and Wanda Sykes, and Chelsea Handler.

Time's own poll showed Poehler at the head of the pack with 48.5% of the votes. Leno is a far second with 24.2%, while Colbert hangs on at third place with 15.2%.

Social media came alive in the wake of Letterman's retirement announcement Thursday.

"The man who owns this network, Leslie Moonves, he and I have had a relationship for years and years and years, and we have had this conversation in the past, and we agreed that we would work together on this circumstance and the timing of this circumstance. And I phoned him just before the program, and I said 'Leslie, it's been great, you've been great, and the network has been great, but I'm retiring," Letterman said, according to CBS News.

"We don't have the timetable for this precisely down. I think it will be at least a year or so, but sometime in the not too distant future, 2015 for the love of God, in fact, Paul and I will be wrapping things up," he added, mentioning his band leader Paul Shaffer.

So, who do you think should replace Dave?
