When the "uncoupled" Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin fired the veritable gun on the news about their separation, a lot of smoke, in the form of whisperings about the circumstances surrounding the demise of their marriage, entered the arena. So much smoke that it appears it will take some time for this to clear out.

Perhaps you should extend your Bahamas family getaway a bit more, Gwyneth and Chris. According to LaineyGossip, the pair were spotted in the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas "on the eve of their separation."

Now, aside from rumors of infidelity, reports of the couple being a non-couple longer than they made us believe has emerged.

An insider reportedly close to the actress and the Coldplay frontman told New York Daily News that the separation wasn't surprising. Do we hear some of you agreeing?

"This news should surprise no one. They haven't been a couple for a number of years and have been pretending for the sake of the kids and each other's careers," the source revealed.

So, was that "must not be photographed together" rule an indication that the couple was estranged way, way back?

Further, the entertainment news site said that yet another mole revealed that the pair almost gave up on their marriage in August last year. They, however, decided to give it one more try. This is consistent with earlier reports about the couple being close to throwing in the towel a few months ago.

Were their efforts to save their ailing marriage the reason why Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter finally decided to pull the plug on the "epic takedown" piece on Gwyneth he was threatening to publish? He had agreed "not to run the story after a heart-to-heart chat with Paltrow," New York Daily News said.

Gwynnie's Goop blog reportedly crashed soon after posting about the "conscious uncoupling."
