The ceremony of the Academy Awards, celebrated on Sunday night at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, without a doubt saw some of the most glamorous moments of the year so far; however, after the ceremony, a mistake made by the Academy's Instagram account caused a stir on social networks.

The event's organizers uploaded to their social networks a photograph of the lovely Penélope Cruz in the company of Robert De Niro backstage, except that they captioned the photo with the incredible mistake of confusing the Spanish actress with Mexican actress Salma Hayek.

According to Fox News Latino, De Niro and Cruz were preparing to deliver two awards, when the Academy's Instagram account uploaded the photo which they captioned "Hayek and De Niro prepping backstage #oscars".

The mistake was immediately identified by users, who harshly criticized the comparison, and the controversial picture was deleted moments after the account was filled by comments from people who were visibly upset over the confusion, but not before users grabbed a screenshot of the embarrassing mistake.

For the moment, the Academy has not emitted any statements or apologies over the confusion of the actresses, who share a friendship; however, the mistake has not been well received among Academy Awards followers, especially after the incident starring host Sam Rubin in recent days, when he confused Samuel L. Jackson with his African American colleague Laurence Fishburne live on television.

And if this wasn't enough, a day before the ceremony, on Saturday, March 1, American publication Slate confused Javier Bardem, Penélope's husband, with Russia's President Vladimir Putin on their Twitter account. A mistake they had to fix minutes later by adding "CORRECTION: This photo is of Javier Bardem, and not Vladimir Putin."

Mexican actress Salma Hayek was not present at the Academy Awards ceremony, because she is worried about her brother's recovery, who a few days ago suffered a car accident in Los Angeles, according to E! News.
