The sequel to "Divergent" will start production in May.

Variety is reporting that "Insurgent" will begin production two months after the release of the first film. Shailene Woodley and Theo James are expected to reprise their roles from the original film.

Production company Red Wagon Entertainment revealed the news as part of its announcement that it has hired Nicki Cortese as VP of film and TV. Cortese served in the same slot at Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road Pictures for the past five years.

The news comes after Lionsgate announced that Goldsman was on board to work on the script for "Insurgent" after Brian Duffield worked on a first draft.

The film currently has no director as Neil Burger has already announced that he will not helm the upcoming installment.

The sequel already has a release date even though "Divergent" has yet to come out. "Insurgent" is slated for release on March 20, 2015, and the third installment "Allegiant" is already scheduled for opening on March 18, 2016.

Summit, a sister company to Lionsgate, will release "Divergent" and has high hopes that the film will be as successful as recent young adult franchises "Twilight" and the "The Hunger Games."

"Divergent" also stars Jai Courtney, Miles Teller and Kate Winslet. The film is set in a dystopian Chicago and tells the story of Beatrice Prior (Tris), a teenager with a special mind, who finds her life threatened when an authoritarian leader seeks to exterminate her kind in her effort to seize control of their divided society.

The new film will be released on March 21, 2014.
