Some men find it difficult to decode what a woman wants as a gift, no matter the occasion. Valentine's Day is just one of those days where a number of guys scratch their head once more over the question of what to give their better halves on this supposedly most romantic day of the year.

Personal finance expert Kara McGuire shared her own real life experience about this with Time magazine - plus a crucial tip that men could be thankful for:

"My husband gave me Penzey's steak spices the first year we were together for Valentine's Day, the same year he bought one of his brothers a bottle of MSG for Christmas-seriously. And I still married him!

"After the steak spices, I enacted a 'soft-and-shiny' rule. Then there was the period when I just told him what to get me, but there's nothing very romantic about that. These days, with three kids and a full-time job, all I really want for is time alone with him."

That's it! Your time and your presence!

Just being there for her does wonders for her day, especially if you're able to top this off with a nice dinner especially prepared by you, as well. Or if you're able to take over her chores and do them yourself, which is the equivalent of giving her a day off.

You can also give her a CD of her favorite artist or the DVD release of a movie she's always meant to watch but wasn't able to. If she's into novels, pick up one by her favorite author (make sure she doesn't have it already!).

You can also give her a set of scented candles or bath products so she can turn your bathroom into her own oasis of luxury and relaxation. Then up the ante by offering a back or foot massage.

Finally, you can throw yourself into making a special, custom-made Valentine's Day card for her. She'll give you massive points for the effort you put into it!
