The 50th annual Cinema Audio Society awards have announced the five nominees for Best Sound Mixing.

The first nominee for the Motion Picture Live Action category is "Captain Phillips" by Paul Greeengrass. The film has scored a number of nominations in this category at the British Academy Awards and is likely to repeat at the Academy Awards.

"Gravity" is another nominee for the society. The film is likely to win the award after having been nominated for every single Sound category at the precursor awards.

"Inside Llewyn Davis" is also nominated for the award. The nomination is not surprising given the fact that most musical films are always nominated for Sound Mixing.

"Iron Man 3" and "Lone Survivor" round out the nominees and both films' nominations are surprising given the lack of love the films have obtained in the precursor awards.

A couple of films that were surprisingly missing included "12 Years a Slave," "Rush," "The Hobbit; The Desolation of Smaug," and "All is Lost."

In the animated film category "The Croods," "Despicable Me 2," "Frozen," "Monster University," and "Walking with Dinosaurs" will compete for the CAS award.

The CAS award for Best Sound Mixing is an important precursor award as the winner of this award is bound to win the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing. Recent winners include "Les Miserables," "Hugo," "True Grit," "The Hurt Locker," and "Slumdog Millionaire."

The Cinema Audio Society will hand out their awards on Feb. 22 in the Crystal Ballroom of the historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel. During the awards dinner, the highest honor of the CAS, the CAS Career Achievement Award, will also be presented to Re-recording Mixer Andy Nelson. The CAS Filmmaker Award Honoree will be announced later this week.
