Just like every year, last Jan. 12th, thousands of people didn't wear any pants while traveling on the subways of various cities around the world, in a massive act organized through social networks.

In one of the so-called "flashmobs", events organized by Internet users around the world, people celebrated the 13th edition of the "No Pants Subway Day", celebrated every Jan. 12th.

According to the website of the International Business Times, in its 2014 edition, the underwear subway trip has gone from being an obscure New York City joke to become a global event that every year manages to gather thousands of people who dare walk around the subway without any pants.

The History of the "No Pants Subway Day"

According to the cited source, the first underwear subway trip was organized in 2002 by the Improv Everywhere theater company, and only 7 people participated in it.

The seven members of the theater company entered a different car each and acted as if they "had simply forgotten their pants back home". By 2008, the joke had extended from New York City to other American cities, and other cities around the world and in 2013 the "No Pants Subway Day" was celebrated in 25 countries and over 60 cities from around the world like Shanghai, Hong Kong, Toronto and Mexico City among others.

Countries like Germany, Belgium and the Czech Republic have seen the number of people rise, most of them young people, that every year are summoned via social networks and online forums, according to The Guardian on its website.

The so-called "flashmobs" are events organized in a short period of time through social media in which a group of people meet at a set point to carry out an unusual or extravagant act.
