Anna Netrebko to Perform at Sochi Olympics

Anna Netrebko will perform at the closing ceremony to the Sochi Olympics.

The soprano will perform on Feb. 23 as the soloist and will be accompanied by a children's choir of thousands of performers. Rehearsals for the concert will be held on Jan. 7 with a symphony orchestra while the final rehearsal will be on Feb. 15 with the soloists.

The press service of the Krasnodar Territory Administration did not report what the choir or the singer will be singing.

Netrebko recently opened the Metropolitan Opera's new season in a new production of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." The performances were conducted by Valery Gergiev and the Oct. 5 HD performance will be released on DVD in February. She recently performed a new production of Verdi's "Il Trovatore" at the Berlin Staatsoper in a controversial production by Phillip Stozl. The Russian soprano also performed Verdi's "Giovanna d'Arco" and Britten's "War Requiem" at the SalzburgFestival where she received acclaim. She will later make her role debut as Lady Macbeth in Verdi's "Macbeth" at the Bavarian State Opera. The soprano is slated to make her role debut as Marguerite in Gounod's "Faust" at the Royal Opera House, Baden Baden, and Vienna State Opera.

The soprano is currently promoting her latest album "Verdi," which recently garnered mixed reviews. The album features music from "Il Trovatore," "I Vespri Sicilianni," "Macbeth," "Giovanna d'Arco," and "Don Carlo."

The Sochi Olympics will begin on Feb. 7.
