The Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical is one of the most competitive categories in years at the 2014 Golden Globes. All five films nominated this year are worthy Oscar contenders and films that have been critically acclaimed.

"American Hustle" - The David O. Russell film marks the second time in a row that the director's movie has been nominated in the category. Out of the five movies competing, this film is the most nominated. It is currently shortlisted for seven categories including four acting nominations. It is also one of the two films that is nominated for Best Director and that is the difference maker. Most of the films that get nominated for this category and best director end up winning. As a result, "American Hustle" may be the front-runner.

"Her" - Spike Jonze's latest film garnered three nominations but missed out on a supporting actress nomination because the Globes deemed Scarlet Johansson's performance ineligible. The movie also failed to receive a directing nod. With these key nominations missing, "Her" is likely to go home empty handed.

"Inside Llewyn Davis" - Once thought of as a front-runner for Best Picture, Joel and Ethan Coen's latest is dissipating from the competition. The Globes have never honored the Coen brothers for their films. In 2007, when "No Country for Old Men" won the Oscar, the Globes gave their Best Picture award to "Atonement." In 2009, the organization also failed to recognize "A Serious Man." This year will be no different. While the Globes honored the movie in three categories including Best Actor and Best Score, the lack of screenplay and director nominations has put the film's chances of winning the Best Picture Comedy/Musical Category into serious jeopardy.

"Nebraska" - Alexander Payne is a popular director with the Hollywood Foreign Press. Both "Sideways" and "The Descendants" took top honors in their respective categories. This year "Nebraska" is nominated for five awards including Best Director and two acting categories. The film is slowly garnering buzz becoming one the big Oscar contenders. With Payne's track record and with the key the nominations, "Nebraska" could be on the road to winning the category.

"The Wolf of Wall Street" - Martin Scorsese's latest film is the least nominated film in the category. The movie is unlikely to win a single award as its subject matter is very controversial and a bit dark for the Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press is noted for preferring lighter fare when they chose their ultimate winners. Scorsese's film has not done very well throughout precursors and it is unlikely that the tides will change for the movie.

Predictions: "American Hustle" is likely the winner especially because it has all the buzz. However, the Globes preference for Payne could sway the organization in favor of "Nebraska."
