Oscar 2014 Precursor: 'American Hustle,' 'The Wolf of Wall Street,' and 'Her' Lead Writers Guild of America Nominations

The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominees for Best Adapted and Original screenplay.

The nominees for Adapted Screenplay are "August: Osage County," "Before Midnight," "Captain Phillips," "Lone Survivor," and "The Wolf of Wall Street."

The Original Screenplay nominees are "American Hustle," "Blue Jasmine," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Her," and" "Nebraska."

The WGA is known for rigid rules and is known for excluding scripts because they were not written within the guild's regulations.

One of the biggest absences among the nominations was "Inside Llewyn Davis." The absence of the film marks the third guild from which Joel and Ethan Coen's latest effort is a no-show.

"Gravity" was also excluded from the list even though it was eligible.

However, the biggest contender absent from the list is "12 Years a Slave" because it was not eligible. Other ineligible films included "Philomena," "Rush," "Short Term 12," "Blue is the Warmest Color," and "The Past."

A snub at the WGA is not as hurtful to Oscar chances as an omission from another Guild is. Many recent winners have not been nominated for the WGA because of its strict rules. These include "Django Unchained" and "The King's Speech." Other Oscar nominees not shortlisted at the WGA awards include "Amour," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Atonement," "The Artist," "Margin Call," "A Separation," "The Ides of March," and "Tinker Tailor Solider Spy."

The Writers Guild of America will announce the winners on Feb.1 at the J.W Marriott in Los Angeles.
