The long peace process that is currently trying to end the fighting between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Federal Government led by Juan Manuel Santos is still under negotiation, in a debate many consider to be slow but could one day end the decades-long fight.
In this hopeful context, the Colombian guerilla invited Argentinian former footballer Diego Maradona and other stars of soccer to join an initiative to play a soccer match in Havana.
According to news agency EFE, the second-in-command of the FARC and its chief negotiator, Luciano Marín Arango, also known as "Iván Márquez", told the media that he would ask the Argentinian star for help to reach peace in the negotiations between the guerilla and the government.
"We're going to send out an SOS to Maradona so he can join us, come play with us so we can try to reach a peace which we have lacked for decades", said Arango.
According to the BBC, Colombian former footballer "El Pibe" Valderrama suggested the idea of organizing a match with FARC to support the peace process, a proposal that was welcomed by the guerilla.
That same Monday, Luciano Marín Arango told Colombian media that the measure would help garner support from the international community to achieve peace and reconciliation.
Just before a new round of negotiations between FARC and Colombia, the guerilla boss considered that the ideal place for the match would be in Havana, Cuba.
"I think it would be a great idea for the Colombian people and the international community to support the peace and reconciliation process of the Colombian family", the guerilla said.
