The trailer to Penelope Cruz's upcoming film "Twice Born" has been released.

The new film, based on the book by Margaret Mazzatini, tells the story of a single mother brings her teenage son to Sarajevo, where his father died in the Bosnian conflict years ago.

The movie premiered in 2012 at the Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festivals but struggled to get a distributor in the United States. However, the film was released in Spain and Italy where it received a number of awards including a Best Actress nomination for Penelope Cruz at the prestigious Goya Awards.

Reviews for the movie were mixed with Rebecca Barry from Flicks.co writing "'Twice Born' regains itself as a compelling and gripping story, several poignant surprises leading to a stunning resolution."

David Rooney from the Hollywood Reporter gave the film a negative review: "Penelope Cruz and Emile Hirsch play ill-matched - in every sense - lovers in Sergio Castellitto's misguided romantic melodrama."

The film was directed by Sergio Catellitto who directed "Love & Slaps" and "Don't Move." The movie also stars Emile Hirsch who is best known for his work in "Prince Avalanche," "Milk" and "Into the Wild."

Cruz was most recently seen in Pedro Almodovar's "I'm So Excited," and Ridley Scott's critically panned "The Counselor," which also starred Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz and Brad Pitt. She is best known for her work in "Nine," "Vicky Christina Barcelona," "Volver" and "Broken Embraces." She is slated to appear in "La Reina de Espana."

"Twice Born" is set to hit theater on Dec. 6 with Entertainment One distributing.
