Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners were recently dealt a major blow when Google announced it would be stopping support for the device since its 18-month update cycle was up, meaning no official Android 4.4 KitKat firmware would land on the phone. Frustrated Galaxy Nexus owners have now taken to the Internet and started a petition in hopes of getting the search giant to change its mind.

Galaxy Nexus enthusiast Max Duckwitz from Nackenheim, Germany took up arms against Google and started a petition outlining reasons why the Galaxy Nexus should receive Android 4.4 KitKat. The main reason? Well, the phone is compatible with Kitkat, sporting 1GB RAM, 512MB more than needed.

Of course, life isn't that simple, and despite the fact that the Galaxy Nexus looks like it would be a sweet fit for KitKat, website SamMobile breaks down some of the intracacies.

"The problem is, the petition might not do much to change Google's minds. The biggest issue here is the lack of updated binaries and hardware drivers for the OMAP chipset powering the Galaxy Nexus - Texas Instruments (TI) is no longer making mobile processors, so getting them to update the OMAP platform will be impossible, which would be the most important obstacle," SamMobile writes.

"Of course, Google could work some magic to solve the issue (the community does update devices unofficially, after all), but with the standard 18-month support period now over, the search giant probably won't want to spend resources on doing so."

Parties interested in signing the petition can do so here.
