Apple finished the third quarter of 2013, based on Counterpoints' figures, with 33.7 percent of the smartphone shipments market share. Samsung garnered 33.6 percent. Apple and Samsung easily dominated the U.S. smartphone market with a total of 67.3 percent of the market share.

For Apple, the smartphone shipments market share is an increase from the 32.2 percent Counterpoints calculated during the second quarter this year. Samsung, however, saw a drop in their smartphone shipments market share by 0.3 percent when comparing to the previous 2013 quarter.

LG managed to secure third place with 8.6 percent of the market share, which is down from the 9.9 percent during the second quarter this year. The figure for LG is still up compared to the 7.6 percent the company garnered during the third quarter of 2012.

Nokia was the highlight of Counterpoints' data. The Finnish-based organization became the fourth-largest smartphone brand as it captured 4.1 percent of the market share. The smartphone market share for Nokia is up from the 1.4 percent during the second quarter of 2013 and from the 0.7 percent during the third quarter last year.

Motorola finished at fifth place with 3.7 percent of the market share, which is 0.1 percentage point down from the second quarter this year. Motorola's loss in the third quarter seems to be a trend as the same quarter in 2012 had the company at third place, behind Samsung, with 8 percent of the market share.
