With the third quarter of 2013 over, Sprint has revealed the number of iPhones sold and expansion of its 4G LTE network.

According to Sprint, the company witnessed the "best-ever" postpaid ARPU and service revenue during the third quarter of 2013.

Sprint noted five million smartphones were sold during the latest quarter with 40 percent representing new customers.

In regards to Apple's smartphones, Sprint announced 1.4 million smartphones sold with the mobile carrier were iPhones.

Sprint further noted it lost 360,000 postpaid subscribers but gained 84,000 prepaid subscribers in return.

Meanwhile, Sprint announced it expanded its 4G LTE network to 45 additional cities.

The latest 4G LTE expansion gives Sprint access to 230 markets across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The new cities receiving Sprint's 4G LTE coverage include Athens, Tx., Greenwood, S.C., Jefferson City, Mo., Laurel, Miss., Lexington, Ky., New Haven, Conn., Pensacola, Fla., Spokane, Wash., and Tallahasse, Fla., to name a few.

"Today's announcement means that we are continuing our nationwide network enhancements, tower by tower, to provide even more Sprint customers the speed and power of Sprint 4G LTE," said Sprint Network's Senior Vice President Bob Azzi. "Our advanced equipment on the new 3G and 4G LTE network provides service you can count on with faster download speeds and also provides state-of-the-art, compact and energy-efficient multimodal equipment."

According to Sprint, the mobile carrier serves more than 53 million customers based on figures by the end of the second quarter of 2013.
