The second-generation 7.9-inch Apple Inc. tablet is speculated to debut on Oct. 22, and with the introduction of the new gadget, the iPad mini 2 is expected to have improvements from its original model.

When it comes to display, the iPad mini 2 has been receiving back and forth reports on whether the tablet would upgrade to Retina Display.

"The Retina Mini looks less certain for that time," said IHS iSuppli's Director of Tablet and Monitor Research Rhoda Alexander, via CNET.

According to ZDNet, it would make sense for Apple to "bump" the iPad mini 2 to Retina Display.

The current iteration of the iPad mini sports 1,024x768 pixels for its 7.9-inch screen. With increasing competition in the tablet market, Apple is expected to improve the pixels numbers as the Google Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HDX 7 have 1,920x1,200 resolution displays.

When it comes to memory, Apple will likely keep the same 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB model ranges as offered with the original iPad mini.

When it comes to the photography specifications, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo projected the iPad mini 2 will have improved megapixels compared to the original iPad mini. The first iPad mini has a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera while Kuo forecast the iPad mini to have 8 megapixels.

The wireless connectivity is expected to be the same as the original iPad mini. The current 7.9-inch tablet is equipped for Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, and USB version 2.0. The iPad mini 2 is expected to carry the same wireless connections.

As Latinos Post reported, conflicting reports surfaced on the fingerprint sensor on the iPad mini 2. The iPad mini does not sport the fingerprint sensor that launched in September with the iPhone 5s. An image on CTECH, allegedly of the iPad mini 2 and iPad 5, showed no fingerprint sensor on the smaller tablet. sensor while the iPad mini 2 does not.

ZDNet reported the A6X chip would be the logical step for the Cupertino-based organization to do. The iPad mini utilizes the A5 chip.

An obvious specification for the iPad mini 2 is the mobile operating system. Apple launched iOS 7 on Sept. 18, and the second-generation mini tablet is expected carry it. The original iPad mini launched with iOS 6, but it can be upgraded to iOS 7.

Apple confirmed an Oct. 22 event will take place from the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Calif., but the Cupertino-based organization didn't specify its purpose. The event is largely speculated to be the setting for the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2's debut. Apple's Oct. 22 event starts at 1 p.m. EST.

Apple has been facing tougher tablet competition as its market share is down considerably when comparing the second quarter of 2013 to the same period last year. Based on the International Data Corporation's (IDC) figures, Apple finished the second quarter this year with 32.4 percent of the market share, which is down from 2012's 60.3 percent.
