So what's going on with Android 4.4 KitKat? Google has yet to give the public or press any in-depth concrete details regarding the latest version of the Mountain View search giant's mobile operating system, but it seems the first bits are beginning to trickle out. Google announced Monday that there will be some changes to SMS in Android 4.4 KitKat.
Google revealed that only one app will able to send and receive SMS messages in Android 4.4 KitKat. It might not be a big deal to many users, but the move should have many developers recoding their apps.
Sending and receiving SMS messages are fundamental features on mobile devices and many developers have built successful apps that enhance this experience on Android. Some of you have built SMS apps using hidden APIs-a practice we discourage because hidden APIs may be changed or removed and new devices are not tested against them for compatibility," reads the official Android Developers Blog.
"So, to provide you with a fully supported set of APIs for building SMS apps and to make the user experience for messaging more predictable, Android 4.4 (KitKat) makes the existing APIs public and adds the concept of a default SMS app, which the user can select in system settings."
Little else is known about Android 4.4 KitKat. Other than a cross-promotional ad campaign with Nestle, Google has not shown off the operating system to the public. Leaks indicate a flatter look, as well as some redesigned app icons and a new Google launcher. All in all, Google will be sticking with the general feel of Jelly Bean.
