After being the location of one of the worst school shootings in the history of the United States in which 26 people lost their lives, Connecticut state authorities and residents have decided to demolish the old facilities of the Sandy Hook Elementary School, as a symbol of a new beginning.

According to CNN, the residents of Newton, Connecticut, voted in favor of demolishing the old school and building a new one in the same location, the construction of which could end by 2016.

The same source indicated that over 90% of the voters were in favor of the proposal, which was assigned 50 million dollars of state funds for the demolition and rebuilding of the school.

The committee in charge of the decision was comprised of 28 members, who have chosen to go ahead with the proposal from various residents and family of the victims who have refused the reopening of the school, informed El Comercio on its website.

Although the approved proposal will have to be voted on by a second panel before becoming effective, the same source reports that the measure is imminent facing the opinion of parents from the area.

"I will chain myself to the school in protest if they try to reopen it", said Erica Laffery, daughter of the school's principal, Dawn Hochsprung, who lost her life in the attacks last year, reports El Comercio.

In December 2012, a person entered the school's facilities and murdered 26 people, including 20 children, reported then news network CNN.

The author of the massacre, Adam Lanza died at the place of the events as well, in which 20 children studying between the first and fourth grades lost their lives.
