The smartphone operating system market shares have been calculated for America's top two mobile carriers, and it is a tight battle between Apple and Google.

According to Kantar Worldpanel, Apple's iOS and Google's Android mobile platforms are at first place with AT&T and Verizon Wireless, respectively.

Verizon Wireless, which is the top mobile carrier in the U.S., has the Android platform at first place when it comes to the smartphone operating system market share for the three months ending in August 2013. The Android mobile operating system accounted for 52 percent, which is down 10.2 percentage points from the same period in 2012.

Apple's iOS finished second with Verizon Wireless. iOS garnered 44.6 percent of the market share, which is an increase from 35.9 percent for the three months ending in August 2012.

Microsoft's Windows Phone also saw an increase in their market share figures with Verizon Wireless as the mobile platform went from 0.0 percent during the three months ending in August 2012 to 2.6 percent during the same period this year.

BlackBerry rounded up the top four from Verizon Wireless, according to Kantar Worldpanel, with 0.5 percent. The latest percentage for BlackBerry is down from 1.5 percent during the three months ending in August 2012.

With AT&T, iOS easily topped Android.

iOS accounted for 60.8 percent of the smartphone operating system market share for the three months ending in August 2013. The iOS percentage is an increase from 49.6 percent during the same period in 2012.

Android's market share with AT&T slipped by 8.7 percent from August 2012 to August 2013. Android finished the three months ending in August 2013 with 32 percent, down from the same period last year with 40.7 percent.

As seen with Android, Windows Phone also slipped by one percentage point. The Microsoft platform finished third with 4.1 percent, which is down from the 5.1 percent during the three months ending in August last year.

BlackBerry's market share with AT&T is better than Verizon Wireless. BlackBerry finished fourth with 2.9 percent, although that is down from the 4.1 percent by the end of August 2012.
