The season three premiere of CBS' "Person of Interest" didn't focus on where The Machine is, but on what it's doing.

The season three premiere, which aired on September 24, saw the team not as interested in The Machine's whereabouts, and more about the leads it was giving. The season three premiere, titled "Liberty," featured Finch (Michael Emerson) and Reese (Jim Caviezel) following The Machine's lead to a member of the Navy who was entangled in a bad situation: his off-shore partner was stealing items taken during missions. Reese relates to the sailor's story, and made it his personal mission to help the man get out of the jam. Shaw joined Reese and Finch's team to save the sailor.

As for Carter, (Taraji P. Henson) she faded into the background a bit after last season's finale. She is still keeping the fact that she's protecting Carl Elias (Enrico Colantoni) a secret from Reese and Finch. She is also using Elias as a source, which she also doesn't tell Reese.

Root (Amy Acker) has the most interesting arc of the bunch; she is still in a mental institution, and is shown in various scenes talking to her psychiatrist. It turns out that she stole her psychiatrist's cell phone and was talking to The Machine. But her psychiatrist found out and put her in solitary confinement. When she came out, it was apparent that she had reached a new level of crazy: she said she has been arguing with The Machine about whether or not she should kill her psychiatrist.

Executive producer Greg Plageman spoke to TVLine about what viewers can expect on the rest of the season.

He said that season three will focus more on what The Machine is doing-- or becoming.

"I'm not certain its [The Machine's] physical location is of paramount importance, more so than, 'What is the Machine evolving into? What sort of an organism is it becoming? And is it expanding beyond the parameters of what even Finch designed?'" Plageman said.

Plageman commented on Root's purpose, and another element that could make The Machine storyline all the more interesting. "What Root represents is a diverging point of view about The Machine's potential, someone who is just as capable as Harold Finch but has a very different philosophical opinion about how they should be treating The Machine. We think that's the most fun, when a villain really starts to make a lot of sense," Plageman said.

"Where we start this year, there's a third entity that The Machine is now reaching out to, and that's where it starts to get interesting, in term of its relationship with Root."

A disillusioned Carter will try to figure out a plan to return to her usual post.  "Where we left off, she's experiencing a certain amount of disillusionment in terms of her service to the NYPD, for obvious reasons. But suffice it to say shes got a big bone to pick with HR, and the fun is watching what Carter's going to do differently to try to figure it out and get back to where she was," he added.

The show will delve deeper into Detective Carter's backstory, as well as Shaw's. Shaw's backstory will be revealed through flashbacks in episode five, and her past may surprise some viewers.

As previously hinted at by TVLine, one episode will feature Carter, Shaw and Zoe (Paige Turco) operating as bait in the episode that is presently called "Ladykiller." Plageman said that guest star Warren Kole will play the person of interest, who is a "real lothario."

Kathleen Rose Perkins ("Episodes") will also guest star as a former ADA who is arrested for murdering her defense attorney ex-husband.

"Person of Interest" airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on CBS.
