As “The Vampire Diaries” approaches its fifth season, vampire lovers are preparing for a major year in the lives of Elena and Caroline. They are going to college, after all. The land of new opportunities, romance, friends, enemies, and most importantly, parties, is overly enticing. But let’s not forget about the beloved bloodsuckers stuck in Mystic Falls. They too will play a pivotal role not only in the lives of the college bound beauties, but in the foundation of the show.

A now human Katherine, a Stefan doppelganger Silas, a lovesick Damon and a dead Bonnie will also play central roles in the upcoming fifth season. Upon its return, Jeremy will be the only person who knows Bonnie’s ‘deadly’ secret, and their new circumstance will bring them even closer, TV Guide reports.

“It creates this intense intimacy, even as a friend, that they never had before,” said Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie on the show. “There were always distractions and they weren’t ever forced to always just ‘be.’ You’ll see a lot of us working together early on in the season.”

Could this new intimacy perhaps create a new Mystic Falls romance loaded with secrets? That would be a new angle for “The Vampire Diaries” to take… (cough).

Now back to the most intriguing element of Season 5: the parties. Unfortunately, the lovely vamp frosh will have a tougher time adapting to college life than they thought. They’ll learn the hard way that they won’t be getting into their first rager without proper invitation, but perhaps that’s for the best. The last thing Whitmore College needs is a few drunk vampire freshman wreaking havoc on campus.

“The Vampire Diaries” returns to The CW October 3.
