The titular character of CW spy drama "Nikita" went MIA in the season finale, leaving fans wondering what's in store for their favorite clandestine heroine.
The final six episodes of the action-packed series will see Nikita (Maggie Q) eventually joining her team again. "The first episode starts with her on the run," co-star Lyndsy Fonseca, who plays Alex, told TVLine. "And by the end of it, she's back with the team."
It was also revealed that Nikita will be falling in with a very rough-and-tumble crowd while on the run.
A sizzle reel for the fourth season, which was released at Comic-Con, gave a trip down "Nikita" memory lane. The reel takes viewers back to a time when Nikita was fighting against the old Division's corruption. It also backtracks to when Michael (Shane West), Birkhoff (Aaron Stanford), Alex and Nikita were cleaning up the mess the old Division left behind. The video then comes back to the most recent season, with Alex shooting Ryan (Noah Bean) and Nikita leaving the team, creating a dramatic cliffhanger.
Lyndsy Fonesca shared more with TVLine about her character's covert operation, as well as what's in store for the final season.
Fonesca shared that Alex is not actually changed as a person; Amanda (Melinda Clarke) "went into Alex's brain and unplugged a couple things and then plugged them back into the wrong holes - she switched the wires," Fonesca said.
Fonesca gave some insight on why her character shot Ryan. "She believes truly that getting these people out is the right thing to do. It's this emotional guilt that's deeper than anyone else feels in Division. There are the girls she left behind in the brothel and her family that she left, so there are many of these recurring situations where she feels like she got to live and they didn't. To continue on living, she has to save these people," Fonesca said.
"That's something that was in old Alex, but now with the rewiring it's like she's connecting the dots in an unrealistic way," she continued. "And when Ryan is all of the sudden [confronting her], he's a threat and she's not going to let anyone stop her. It wasn't a conscious 'I want to kill you' shoot; it was a 'don't stop me from doing this' kind of thing."
Fonesca said that Alex's mission will soon catch up to her. "She can't keep on doing all of these things, creating this team of mutineers to go against Division - it's all going to come to a head."
She further revealed that Sean (Dillon Casey) will get involved, which will only complicate matters.
Viewers will see that Alex's game-changing plan will continue until it gets too big for her to handle. "The mutiny thing definitely goes further and further for at least a couple of episodes after this one," Fonesca said. "Alex is going to be stuck in the middle... Things are going to go so far out of her control. It's all going to blow up. There's really sad, crazy s-t that's going to happen."
She also hinted that viewers will see more of a Amanda/Nikita focused storyline at the end of the season.
"It gets really juicy," Fonesca said. She also added,"Michael's also thrown in there, believe it or not. He comes into the mix in interesting ways."
Showrunner Craig Silverstein told TVLine that Amanda and The Shop will be the main adversaries next season, and that the "villain of the week" plots will dissipate in order to look at larger, serialized events.
"So, [next season] will be like going right for the icing on the cake and not having to worry about the cake. We'll get right to the good stuff right away," Silverstein said.
"Nikita" is slated to air in late fall, although an air date has not yet been announced.
